Bible Study Notes – 9/8/10

September 9, 2010

6Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? 7Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: 8Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. – 1 Corinthians 5:6-8

Sin in its simplest, smallest form has a detrimental effect on the life of a believer and the lives of those around him or her.  Remember Achan? (Read Joshua 7-9)  The children of Israel were told not to partake of any spoils from their previous victory in war.  However, Achan decided that didn’t apply to him or his family.  So when David led his army to battle again, they lost miserably and David soon learned that someone (Achan) had hidden spoils under their tent.

Just as Achan’s disobedience cost David’s men their lives, so does our disobedience and rebellion cost our church’s effectiveness.  We should have a discomfort and distaste for sin.  We should desire intimacy with the Lord to such a capacity that the thought of breaking such a connection through foolish, unwise decisions to sin make us cringe and go the other way.  That’s not to say we will always get it right, but to willfully sin and not believe that God’s Word in its entirety is absolutely true speaks to lack of love for our Lord and Savior.  And if we do sin, let us always keep the door of repentance open.  Let us be quick to change from our ways of wickedness.

God has given to us a perfect freedom – a freedom with some restraints that are only for our benefit.
